Portland Chamber & Office of Economic Opportunity Collaborate on Strategic Plan to Aid New Mainers

The Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Portland Office of Economic Opportunity have created a strategic plan to help foster a strong sense of belonging in every aspect of city life and a meaningful inclusion and connectivity between our racially diverse communities, including immigrants and refugees, and the business communities.

The Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO), in partnership with the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce (PRCC), is pleased to announce the creation of their strategic plan to foster economic inclusion and development in Portland.  In September of 2017, The OEO and the PRCC were recipients of the Gateways for Growth Challenge. This challenge, presented by the New American Economy and Welcoming America, helps support the development of a multi-sector strategic plan with the goal of attracting, retaining and integrating immigrants and international talent. The hope is that this plan will help spur new initiatives to support entrepreneurs from all backgrounds; promote citizenship and financial empowerment; improve opportunities to become socially, culturally and civically engaged and advance educational and workforce goals to help the region compete in the global economy.

“The City of Portland and the Portland Regional Chamber are committed to the actions that made up this plan. Creating an inclusive City where everyone feels a strong sense of belonging is paramount to the continuous growth and vibrancy of our City,” said Julia Trujillo, Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity. “We are formally joining efforts in order to bring greater intentional coordination to the integration of immigrants and other racially diverse communities into the socio-economic fabric of our city.”

The Gateways for Growth Challenge selected municipalities across America to receive direct technical assistance for New American Economy and Welcoming America to develop multi-sector plans for welcoming and integrating New Americans.

“We fully understand the multilayered aspect of meaningful integration. It takes a wide cross-sector partnership to achieve success,” Trujillo said. “We invite our entire community to participate in achieving the results outlined in this plan. We are already grateful by the so many community members, nonprofit and for-profit alike, who had helped us get to this point. We now have a blueprint that helps us focus our efforts to achieve better and faster results. Our city, business community, and the lives of so many depend upon it.”
