City Welcomes America East Women's Basketball Tournament to Portland

City officials are welcoming the America East Women’s Basketball Tournament to Portland beginning tonight when City Manager Jon Jennings will give welcoming remarks at the America East #SheRules Symposium, Voices of Women: Empowerment Through Sports, Stories to Inspire. The free and open to the public symposium is presented by the Maine Sports Commission and it takes place tonight, Thursday, March 2, 2017 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Hannaford Hall on the University of Southern Maine campus in Portland.

 

On Friday, March 3, Mayor Ethan Strimling will give welcoming remarks to all of the teams during the private conference banquet at the Westin Hotel at 5:00 PM. 


The tournament will be held at the Cross Insurance Arena March 2 - 5 and the winner will earn a bid to the 2017 NCAA Division 1 Women’s Basketball Tournament. This is the first time in 20 years that the tournament is being held in Portland. It will also return in 2018. The tournament is expected to have an economic impact of $2 million each year in games and related festivities. 


A fan fest will be held on Friday, March 3, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cross Insurance Arena that will be an interactive day where families can experience Maine through interactive photo booths and meet some Red Claws representatives.

Leaders will illustrate how sports have positively influenced their lives, emphasizing the significant role activity, mentoring and community, plays into contributing to the healthy development of young women. 


Speakers include Amy Huchthausen, Commissioner of America East; Christina McAnuff, Executive Director, Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute; Luba Lowery, Paralympian; Emily Marvin, Maine Roller Derby; Jo Dill, Maine Senior Women’s Basketball; Christina Strong, former University of Maine Women’s Basketball; and Edniesha Curry, former WNBA, Assistant Coach, University of Maine Women’s Basketball.   


Guests are invited to engage with Community Partners: 

 

This free event is open to all youth and community members involved in education, athletics and programs for children. Doors open at 5pm ~ light fare will be provided. 

The America East #SheRules Symposium tips off the America East #SheRules Women’s Basketball Championship games, March 4 and 5, 2017, hosted by Shamrock Sports at the Cross Insurance Arena. Tournament ticket information may be found at #SHERULES.


About the Maine Sports Commission - The Maine Sports Commission (MSC), a statewide initiative aims to promote Maine as a four-season destination for sports events and sports-related meetings and to increase their economic impact in the state by attracting new events or by growing existing sports-related events, including professional, collegiate, amateur, and youth sporting events. MSC was created in February 2012, in response to the growing demand for information regarding sports events and sports-related meetings in the state of Maine. The leadership of the MSC includes representatives from the Maine Office of Tourism, representatives from the Bangor and Portland Convention & Visitors Bureaus, and the sports, education, and tourism industries.
