Office of Elder Affairs partnered with the Elder Abuse Institute of Maine in 2009

The Portland Office of Elder Affairs partnered with the Elder Abuse Institute of Maine in 2009 to develop a unique program that provides transitional housing and support services for older Mainers experiencing domestic abuse. Now in it's 8th year, the federally funded "Martha's Cottage" project has gained national attention as a model that works. Downeast Magazine's October issue features an article about abuse in later life, the transitional housing program,and the story of Martha's Cottage's first resident who escaped four decades of abuse at the hands of her husband and found the support she needed to rebuild her life.
