Trash Truck with Arm

City of Portland now uses an automated truck to collect recycling by using a mechanical arm that extends to pick up the recycle cart. This method of collection is more efficient, safer for the employees and reduces workers compensation cases and emissions. When placing your recycle cart curbside we ask that you place the cart 3 feet away from other objects such as trash bags and cans, cars, overhead obstructions, mailboxes and fire hydrants. It’s important to have the cart handle facing the curb with the lid opening facing the street. Please have your trash and recycling curbside by 6:30am and pull it back from the curb by 8pm on your service day. Wednesday on the peninsula is the only day of the week we do not use the automated trucks for service. For more information, please contact the Solid Waste Division at 207-756-8011 or email us

The City of Portland has a “Pay-As-You-Throw” trash collection system.  The cost of disposing of trash is covered by the cost of the bags, so you pay only for what you throw away.  City trash bags are available at these retail locations in the Portland Area.  Trash will only be collected in the City of Portland purple trash bags. The City does not supply trash cans, but we do suggest obtaining a trash container for your trash bags to avoid vermin tearing into the bags. DO NOT PLACE A CITY TRASH BAG IN THE BLUE RECYCLE CONTAINER. RECYCLING ONLY IN THE BLUE CART.
