Duties of the Department


The Department of Public Works helps keep the City of Portland moving each day with many areas of responsibility. We collect your garbage and recycling, clear your streets of ice and snow in the winter, help maintain the city's sewer system, build your sidewalks, manage the city's traffic lights and street signage, and the list goes on.
  1. Traffic Alert: Washington Avenue Paving Project Involves Lane Closures on July 24 and 25

    Glidden Excavating and Paving, Inc. has scheduled work on Monday, July 24 and Tuesday, July 25, 2017 to mill Washington Avenue between Ocean Avenue and Presumpscot Street. Work hours are scheduled to be 7 AM to 7 PM on Monday and 5 AM to 7 PM on Tuesday. Read on...
